One of my biggest 3D print projects has been this range of Festiniog Railway wagons. These have been painstakingly recreated to provide incredibly detailed and accurate models, which are also incredibly simple to assemble. All feature plug and socket axleboxes which are secured using square headed pins (representing square headed nuts on the prototype) or 14BA nuts and bolts. All are designed for Slater's wheelsets and bearings.

Wagon Bodies - No Couplings or Axleboxes

These are the basic body units that make up the models. They all require a pair of couplings, axleboxes, wheels and a means of attaching axleboxes to the body. This can be done using square headed pins AC01 or alternatively 16 or 14BA nuts and bolts (placing the nut on the outside of the solebar). All axleboxes are designed to accept the bearings supplied with Slater's wheels.

FRB01 - FR2 Ton Iron Slate Wagon (Unbraked, no Coupling)

Introduced in the 1850s to reduce maintenance costs on the wagon fleet, this type quickly became the most numerous in use on the FR. Requires Plain (AB01) or Split (AB02) Axleboxes and couplings CPL01. Any of the Slaters FR Wheels are suitable.

FRB02 - LNWR 2 Ton Iron Slate Wagon (Unbraked, no Coupling)

This was an LNWR built wagon closely following the design of the FR 2 Ton wagons for transporting slate on standard gauge transporter wagons to the quay at Deganwy. Requires Axleboxes AB and Couplings CPL02. Use Slater's curved spoke wheelsets.

FRB03 - FR Wooden 2 Ton Slate Wagon (Unbraked, No Coupling Links)

This was an early design, which although declining in number, lasted until the end of the railway. Requires Axleboxes AB03 and Coupling links CPL03. Use any Slater's FR Wheelset.

FRB04 - FR Long Slab Wagon (No Couplings)

This was an early design, developed alongside the iron slate wagons and built using the same design principles but with a wheelbase of 5 feet. Requires axleboxes AB01 and couplings CPL01. Use Slater's oval hole disc wheelsets. The wooden slats are available in a pack with axleboxes (AC01) or can be cut from strips of real timber. Chain eyes will need to be provided.

FRB05 - FR Bolster Wagon (Braked, No Couplings)

A typically elegant Spooner design! Similar in construction to the wooden Slate Wagon, these are rather quirky vehicles. The main body here also includes the pivoting Bolster with integral prongs. Use axleboxes AB03 and couplings CPL03. Additional optional parts are available lower down the page.

FRB05a - FR Bolster Wagon (Unbraked, No Couplings)

A typically elegant Spooner design! Similar in construction to the wooden Slate Wagon, these are rather quirky vehicles. The main body here also includes the pivoting Bolster with integral prongs. Use axleboxes AB03 and couplings CPL03. Additional optional parts are available lower down the page.

FRB06 - FR Gunpoweder Wagon (Braked, No Couplings)

This is based on the Oakley & Llechwedd quarry wagons which were near identical in appearance. Requires axleboxes AB04, couplings CPL04 and brake gear parts from the additional parts section lower down the page. You will additionally need to supply wire for the hinges, and to complete the look of the interior it would be a good idea to have a small sheet of flexible wood veneer. The main body here includes pedestals for brake shaft, and is supplied with doors.

Wagon Bodies with Coupling, no Axleboxes

These are the basic body units that make up the models, but are supplied with integral couplings. They all require axleboxes, wheels and a means of attaching axleboxes to the body. This can be done using square headed pins AC01 or alternatively 16 or 14BA nuts and bolts (placing the nut on the outside of the solebar). All axleboxes are designed to accept the bearings supplied with Slater's wheels.

FRC01 - FR2 Ton Iron Slate Wagon (Unbraked, no Coupling)

Introduced in the 1850s to reduce maintenance costs on the wagon fleet, this type quickly became the most numerous in use on the FR. Requires Plain (AB01) or Split (AB02) Axleboxes and couplings CPL01. Any of the Slaters FR Wheels are suitable.

Axleboxes

A Range of axleboxes which plug directly into the sockets in the relevant bodies. Attach using Pins AC01 or 16BA/14BA nuts and bolts with the nuts to the outside.

AB01 - Plain FR Axleboxes

Originally fitted to unbraked wagons, these are very basic pedestal axleboxes indeed! Supplied as a set of 4. Fit using 14BA Nuts and Studs or Square headed bolts in AC02.

AB02 - Split FR Axleboxes

Originally fitted to braked wagons, these are an improved design allowing the wheelsets to be removed more easily.  Supplied as a set of 4. Fit using 14BA Nuts and Studs or Square headed bolts in AC02.

AB03 - Axlebox for wooden framed wagons

As used on Wooden Slate and Bolster wagons Supplied as a set of 4. Fit using 14BA Nuts and Studs or Square headed bolts in AC03.

AB04 - Split Axlebox for Extended Axle wagons

Some FR Wagons used longer axles than most, so this axlebox features an extension of the same diameter of the axle to simulate it when used with standard Slater's wheelsets. Fit using 14BA Nuts and Studs or Square headed bolts in AC03.

AB05 - LNWR Axlebox

Displays date of 1885, alternative years can be arranged

Couplings

A Range of combined buffer/coupling units for the above wagon bodies. These are produced as one piece in Brass or Bronze and are fully functional. Supplied singly.

CPL01 - Couplings for Iron Slate Wagons

The typical centre buffer and hook and link as used on many Iron wagons. Will also fit Slater's 2 Ton Wagon kits.

CPL02 - Couplings for LNWR Slate Wagons

Similar to the FR type but more rounded and slightly smaller.

CPL03 - Coupling Link and Hook for wooden wagons

A D-Shackle and hook for use in the drawbar of wooden underframe stock.

CPL04 - Couplings for Gunpowder Vans

A Rounded Buffer with hook and link couplings.

Additional, Spare & Miscellaneous Parts

A Range of parts required to complete the above wagons as well as spares and miscellaneous Festiniog Wagon parts.

AC01 - Wooden Bearers and Axlebox Set for Long Slab Wagon

A Set of AB01 axleboxes as well as 4 bearers for the floor of the wagon. Fit these using countersunk or counterbored 14BA nuts and bolts

AC02 - Axlebox Fitting Pins (Square Head)

1mm diameter brass or Bronze pins with square nut and stud heads, for fitting axleboxes to wagons.

AC03 - Bolster with Prongs from FRB05

A Swivelling bolster with prongs and pivot pin.

AC04 - Brake Lever for Van 116

Ratcheting Brake Lever for FR Va 116 (preserved as van 99). Also requires brackets, ratchet pawl and guide to complete as a fully working lever. Intended to be used on One12 models kit.

AC05 - Brake Lever Guide

For Van 116, Use With AC04

AC06 - Brake Lever Mounting Brackets

For Van 116. Use with AC04, 05 and 07 and assemble with 14BA Screws for a fully functioning ratcheting brake lever.

AC07 - Brake Lever Ratchet pawl (Van116)

Use with AC04-06, pinning to AC04 with a small piece of 0.6mm rod to form a working ratcheting brake lever

AC08 - FR Sprung Buffer body, tapered

Use with Slater's 16L to create a functional sprung buffer as used on FR goods stock.

AC09 - FR Sprung Buffer body, Banded

Use with the sprung heads from Slater's 16A10 'Prince' Buffers to create a functional sprung buffer as used on FR goods stock.
